Mt Isa Day 9 &10

A really long driving day when you have the flu & feel like shit. I would have preferred to do it over 2 days, but the car was booked in for a service on Friday in Mt Isa, so we had to get there Thursday night. The next available service centre was Darwin, way too far away. We left Longreach in the dark as the sun is very lazy this far west & is still way below the horizon at 7am. Plenty of dead kangaroos on the road, cleaned up during the night by the road trains, hundreds of hawks, eagles & crows feasting on their daily fresh road kill. Seven hours of driving later we reached the Isa, but we did have a strong tail wind all day.
There may be quite a few days after today without any posts, as we will be heading into very remote areas.

We saw many hours of this, there is no shortage of nothing in Australia.

Caravans & trucks pulled up for the night, roadside, a long way from anywhere. We have done this ourselves, many times.

A few hours down the road some distant hills break the monotony.

Approaching Winton we saw a train, the most exiting thing so far.

Construction site at Winton, rebuilding the dinosaur centre which burnt down a couple of weeks after our last trip through Winton.

An old loging dray on display in the main street of Winton. There were some boring details on a plaque, weights, horses, sizes etc, but who gives a damn anyway.

There is an emu in this picture, there were quite a few around, but having the camera ready at just the right time is almost impossible.

More exiting hills in he distance.

Finally some texture in the landscape as we approach Cloncurry.

Lunch & a cup of coffee at the Kynuna pub, a short break from driving.

The flat country giving way to the rugged hills between Cloncurry & Mt Isa.

The welcome sight of the chimneys at the Mount Isa mines coming into view. Not shown is the view latter as the sun set when the smoke formed pink & white clouds, just like the song.

 A welcome sign.

Looking over the centre of town to the mine site.
In JWs; words
Big galvanised roofs & monster pipes black,
Pink & white clouds from a chimney stack,
Red dust & hawks in the wind out back.
Here we are at the Isa....

A hilltop house on the Eastern entrance to town.

Looking over Mcleans' & our van from a nearby hilltop.

Returning from a dusty walk in the paddock beside the caravan park.

Some birds I was feeding beside the van.

Holding a piece of bread in his claws while he dismembers it. These guys are really argumentative & bad tempered.

A top notch pidgeon joins the other birds for a handout.
