Kalgoorlie

Its been 3 or 4 days since the last post & we have covered a lot of territory in that time as we had to be in Kalgoorlie by the 19th to have our car serviced. It is once again about 1000k overdue.
We travelled down through Nannup then Manjimup, Walpole, Denmark, Albany, Jerramungup, Esperance & a very enjoyable night at Gibson Soak. On through Norseman, Coolgardie & now we are in Kalgoorlie. Tomorrow we go on a tour of the giant pit while the car is being serviced.

Some nice bushland near our morning tea stop at Manjimup.

 As above.

Our overnight freecamp near a river outside Albany.

The wildflowers have just been going on & on, everything that grows here is exploding with flowers of every colour. They had a lot of rain here while we were sweltering in Broome, I think this is the result.

 As above.

Even the ground is covered with flowers. These little guys grow only about an inch above the ground.

We found a water fill up point that was very welcome at Raventhorpe.

Wheat fields & canola fields stretched from horizon to horizon for hundreds of kilometres.

 The raod approaching Esperance.

The intersection of Farrell & Sears road.

The freecamp at Gibson Soak, which was ony 50 metres from the pub, so we had a very nice counter tea there in front of the open fire as it was quite cold. During the night we had a massive storm with driving rain & howling winds, but the morning once again brought a fine day.

 The main street of Walpole.

Besides grain fields there were lots of sheep.

 The giant trees near Walpole.

As above. This area was clear felled in 1953 & this has regrown since.

 As above.

There were many colours of native orchids.

The Pallinup river our overnight stay.

This area had a lot of orange tones. You would see massive areas of orange while driving. In other areas there would be huge areas of purple or red or yellow or blue, it has been quite spectacular..

 Bridge over Pallinup river.

 Yellow flowers.

Coming into Ravensthorpe.

There were large areas of this very silver bush, south of Norseman.

 As above.

Lake Cowan, salt lake, north of Norseman.

Coolgardie had a very rich past, thanks to gold mining.  Now days it is very sad with almost every shop boarded over.

Coolgardie. This was about the only place open.

 Old Coolgardie goal.

 Another view of lake Cowan.

Yvonne spotted this emu with 3 large chicks. She likes to see emus.

  1. Wow! That open pit gold mine looks like a mini grand canyon . . . . maybe no so mini! Looks like you are seeing a lot of stuff and covering heaps of remote country. Probably not much to post while you are crossing the nullabor anyway, but will look forward to your ongoing posts. Love, Roz
